snippet: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), on behalf to the United States Government, has a requirement to carry out multibeam echosounder surveys of specific regions on the continental margin (slope and rise) of the U.S. Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands. These data are required to support any potential claim for extended jurisdiction by the United States under United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) Article 76. The requirement is for the collection and processing of full-coverage multibeam sonar data in water depths of approximately 2000 to 10,500 m in order to precisely define the location of the 2500-m isobath and the foot of the slope as defined under UNCLOS Article 76. As part of their NOAA-funded research program, University of New Hampshire (UNH) researchers oversaw cruise planning, data acquisition, data processing and archiving of the data collected during cruise BD06-01, BD07-01, SU10-01, SU10-02, and FS1601 cruises. The cruise reports for this synthesis are located at: http://ccom.unh.edu/theme/law-sea/cruise-reports/marianas. UNH was responsible for generating gridded bathymetry and acoustic backscatter data sets at sea from the BD06-01, BD07-01, SU10-01, SU10-02, and FS1601 survey data. Additional sets of gridded data were produced by UNH post cruise. Information about UNH Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping field activity are online at http://ccom.unh.edu/unclos/reports.htm. Three different export formats were generated for this dataset, with each data format identifiable by its file suffix. The suffix and associated file types for each export are : 1) .asc which is an ESRI ASCII grid, 2) .sd which is a QPS Fledermaus file, and 3) .xyz which is an ASCII xyz text file. The primary datasets for this grid are from the BD06-01, BD07-01, SU10-01, SU10-02, and FS1601 cruises, supplementing this data is processed and cleaned data from the EX1605L1, EX1605L2, and EX1605L3 cruises conducted on the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explore.
